Whānau gathered at Waiohiki Marae in Ahuriri Napier over the weekend to celebrate the launch of Ka Uruora Te Matau-a-Māui – a partnership between Tamatea Pōkai Whenua, Mana Ahuriri, and Ka Uruora that will see hundreds of new homes built across the region in the coming years.
Ka Uruora Te Matau-a-Māui will deliver a range of housing pathways for whānau – including discounted rentals, rent-to-buy, and shared equity schemes – alongside financial education programmes to prepare families for home ownership.
“By joining forces with Ka Uruora, we are not just building homes – we are building futures where our whānau can flourish for generations,” says Mana Ahuriri Trust chair Te Kaha Hawaikirangi. “Our vision is to see whānau in quality homes, on our whenua, with real pathways to both rental and ownership. Each home will be a foundation for the next generation to thrive.”
“Our whānau cannot afford to wait for change to arrive from elsewhere,” says Tamatea Pōkai Whenua chair Pōhatu Paku. “It’s our responsibility as kaitiaki of our whenua and our people to act now. Together with Ka Uruora, we’re creating the security our whānau deserve – today and for generations to come.”
Ka Uruora chair Jamie Tuuta says the Hawke’s Bay launch reflects the organisation’s vision for iwi and PSGE led housing transformation nationwide. “When iwi work together with determination and purpose, we can create systemic change. This kaupapa is about more than bricks and mortar – it’s about enabling whānau to stand tall, build wealth, and reclaim a sense of security and belonging on their whenua.”
The first step for Ka Uruora Te Matau-a-Māui is to get whānau enrolled in financial literacy courses beginning 16 September, ensuring they are ready when new homes become available.
